Setting
Some critics believe this play to take place during the declining stages of Rome. All of the rape, bodily mutilation, betrayals, and confusion among who is ruler that are all present in this play doesn't seem to reflect the glory days of Rome. Rome itself seems to be in a state of utter disarray, and that's why it most likely takes place towards the fall of Rome.
